As the global demands on road infrastructure grow ever more complex — from extreme weather and ageing networks to rising traffic volumes and the imperative of decarbonisation — innovation and new technologies has never been more vital. In the session “New Technologies and Innovation in the Road Sector”, leaders, practitioners, researchers and industry experts were invited to explore how the next generation of tools, methods and systems was reshaping the way roads were designed and managed.
This session focused on the cutting-edge of mobility and infrastructure technologies and their application in real contexts. It served as a forum for those who were defining the future of roads — not only in response to change, but ahead of it.
It was designed for public-sector road agencies, infrastructure owners, operators and contractors, technology developers and integrators, transport researchers, consultants, and policy-makers. Whether participants were already deploying digitalisation and automation in their operations, or were beginning to investigate what “smart infrastructure” might mean for them, they found value, inspiration and concrete take-aways.
Participants gained insight into emerging technological trends and how they were being applied in diverse climatic, financial and operational contexts.
They engaged with innovators translating research into field-tested solutions, and with operators deploying them at scale.
They shared their own experiences, successes and lessons learned, contributing to the definition of global best practice for resilient, sustainable road mobility.
What was taken away?
- A deeper understanding of how new technologies enabled resilient, low-carbon and cost-effective road services in every season.
- Practical case studies of innovation and applications of new technologies — from pilot projects to full-scale roll-outs — across a variety of geographies and conditions.
- Networking opportunities with leading experts and peers facing similar challenges and opportunities.
- Inspiration and actionable ideas to bring back to organisations, advance practice, and strengthen innovation roadmaps.
