This session explored the global innovations in winter service, with presentations from the call for papers. Experts from the USA, Italy, and Japan presented pioneering solutions including automating salt application rates using on-board sensors, innovative technical approaches combined with C-ITS technologies to enhance safety on the Brenner Motorway, the development of autonomous traffic sign vehicles utilizing satellite and V2V communication systems, and advanced LiDAR applications for detecting snowdrifts and reduced visibility. Together, these contributions demonstrated how automation and digitalisation were driving safer, more efficient, and more sustainable practices in winter maintenance worldwide.
