17TH World Congress on Road Winter Service, Resilience and Decarbonisation - Proceedings of the Congress

Resilience Session 11 - Extreme Weather: Coping Mechanisms

Friday, March 13 09:30 - 11:00
Chair: Marcelo MEDINA, WG1 Leader, Spanish Speaking Secretary, PIARC TC1.5, Chile
Room: Room 3

This session explored road engineering resilience in the face of extreme weather, a growing focus of PIARC Technical Committee 1.5 – Disaster Management. As climate-related events intensified, the session examined strategies to reduce vulnerability and ensure network functionality. Drawing on PIARC technical reports, it highlighted Japan’s use of early warning systems and adaptive maintenance following typhoons, and Australia’s application of climate-resilient pavement materials in flood-prone areas. These examples showed how integrating risk-informed planning, design adaptations, and emergency protocols significantly enhanced infrastructure performance. The session promoted knowledge sharing to support global efforts in building more resilient and reliable road networks.
