Chair: Imen Makhlouf, Chair of PIARC TC2.2, Tunisia
Room: Room 2
Rural roads were essential lifelines in low- and middle-income countries. They enabled mobility between communities, provided access to markets, education, and health services, and supported the transport of agricultural goods to urban centers. Their role in food security, social inclusion, and local economic integration remained fundamental.
Yet, climate change increasingly undermined their sustainability. More intense rainfall, flooding, drought, erosion, slope failures, and rising temperatures weakened pavement structures and interrupted rural accessibility. These disruptions directly affected daily life, economic productivity, and regional development.
This session focused on innovative materials, construction techniques, and digital tools aimed at strengthening rural road resilience.
